Situational Tour: THE HOOK UP

It's only 6:30am and it's hot already.

Hi, I am Wayne Fleshman but most people call me Flesh. I work outside plant for Verizon. My days usually start off right here at 935 V. I work in DC, MD, and VA. Today, I got to meet my crew somewhere in Northern Maryland.

"Na man see that J is broke, you can put that joint back."

"Hey B gimme that Apollo."

"What's Up Earl?"

"Yo, What up Flesh?"

"Yo, hold up Fred, Len say cheese."

“CHEESE.”

"Hey, yal can take them pictures later. Earl and them ready to get started pulling that lasher."

"Len drive me behind Earl.so I can bug it off while he's lashing."

"FORWARD!"

"Come on Fred!"

“Come on Flesh you can ride with me and M.”

"Bet."

"Len."

“FORWARD!”

“Hold on Flesh.”

“Yeah, Okay. Len you wearing that steering wheel ain’t you girl?"
“Shut up Flesh you know I’m short.”

“HOLD THAT!”

Within three minutes Earl arrives at the first pole.

First he tapes off the lashing wire and then he transfers the lasher. This process is called (straight lashing).

The Apollo lasher weights nearly 50 pounds and costs over $25,000.00. It spins around both cable and strand while being pulled. After Earl has transfer the lasher to the other side of the pole he can then continue to lash.

“FORWARD!”, he shots.

One down only one hundred and six more to go.

“HOLD THAT!”says M.

He will now cut the lashing wire and attach the bugnuts to the strand. This will keep the cable tight to the strand and prevent it from sagging. His process takes about 10 minutes per pole.

A deer watches us as we work well into the day.

The sun can really burn down on whomever works up in the bucket.

And you must stay alert, at substations there can be 50 thousand volts electricity only 40 inches from your head.

It's a good idea to a fresh bucket operator.

Verizon wants to upgrade its entire copper network to fiber. Verizon wants all employees to "see the light", "sell the light"

The Old New Inside Out Upside Down

Are the newer forms of art and expression uniting or dividing our society? Do they further expose the generation gaps that exist in most of our homes? Furthermore, will all be able to afford and understand the new medium and/or technology?

Ironically, I opted to title this blog “The Old New Inside Out Upside Down.” What makes it ironic is currently, I am attending American University as a Visual Media student in my senior year, and I’m sick and tried of reading all that clever shit that makes you think too much. What made authors become so subjective anyway? Why must intellectuals be so damn intellectual?
Okay, by now you can probably see what frame of mind I’m in and one of the last things that I’m trying to do here, at this juncture in my life, is to be clever by coming up with a witty , cute title that may or may not provide humor or enlighten some of my readers. But never the less that’s the title and you can plainly read the lively green bold text in the above now, let me briefly justify it.
The old refers to the relative time, historically in which mankind has sought to express his feelings and/or thoughts artistically. Within the text of “Multi Media From Wagner to Virtual Reality “ the authors discuss cave dwellings that were found dating back to 15000bc and the integration of the arts. The usage of word old in the title also refers to old people. Not old like forty, but, old like seventy, seniors will be left out, unable to keep up with the newer forms of artistic expression.
That brings to our next word, new. Yes, new like in new forms of mediums, new generations of both consumers and artists. On the other hand, new problems tend to lead to new legislation. I have learned that legislation is not free. It is most costly to taxpayers. So the inside story is that new forms of art could lead to newer, higher taxes. Uncle Sam is going to get his cut and then the local boys are going to get theirs and finally it will lead to an increase in goods and services. An example of this is AOL to DSL to FIOS each improvement of service costs more than the last. HDTV costs more than regular cable and cable cost more than TV and so on. We have come accustomed to paying for the upgrade.
This brings us to our next word, inside. Who will have the new technology inside their homes? And are we aright with leaving the others out? It won’t just be the elderly; we will also have to continue to exclude those that have not reached the level of our finical freedom. See now I am trying to be cute. But seriously you never know what a person is capable of doing. Economics has tough me that this world has become one that relies on interdependent markets. There is a real concern among the global leaders to raise the standards of lesser-developed nations. If conditions in LDCs improve then the global markets will do likewise. For some reason I am convinced that this global attitude can be redirected to an individual. And in closing, I truly believe that there is an upside to helping those that are down.
